3 Ways to Prep Your Skin For Special Events

With the holidays just around the corner, and the ups and downs of lockdown still effecting us, our skin miiight be freaking out a little bit. But we want to show up to our family events (either in person or digitally) looking and feeling our best. And who can blame us? We deserve to live our best life!

I’m going to talk about 3 ways to prep your skin for special events that you can apply to holidays, parties, meetings, interviews… you name it! These same tips apply.

1. Start from within

Skin is the largest organ of our body. Like any other organ, what we consume plays a huge factor in the health and appearance of our skin. Nourishing your body and offering all of the optimal nutrition your body needs is critical. for optimal skin health.

I’m not saying to start a diet before an event! There are just a few guidelines that are helpful:

  • drink lots of water
    • I mean WATER! You want to be drinking enough water that your pee is clear
    • avoid drinking alcohol leading up to your event if possible, as alcohol can lead to inflammation in the skin. This can result in breakouts and dullness
  • skip the foods that irritate your system
    • check in with yourself and your body – I’ll bet you’ve noticed that you don’t feel well after you eat certain foods, or that you feel bloated or get breakouts around other foods. Just skip those for a few days before your big event
    • for me, it’s dairy. When I completely cut out all dairy, my skin glows

Once you are at your event, eat, drink, and be merry (responsibly)!

2. Get a professional skin treatment

You knew this was coming! If you want next-level glowing skin, you’ll want to supplement your home skin care routine with a professional skin care treatment. My two favorites are dermaplanes and chemical peels.

Dermaplaning is a service which uses a medical grade blade to gently scrape the surface of the skin. This removes the dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, and as a bonus it also removes any peach fuzz with it. The result is amazingly smooth, supple skin. If you’ll be applying makeup for your event, you’ll be in love with how flawlessly it applies to this smooth, dermaplaned skin.

Chemical peels are a service using esthetician grade concentrations of hydroxy acids, which exfoliate away the dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Chemical peels are also often antibacterial, helping with acne treatment and prevention. Some hydroxy acids in chemical peels can be anti-fungal which can help clear up folliculitis or fungal acne. Most hydroxy acids also help even skin tone and minimize hyperpgimentation.

If you’ve never had these services before, I recommend getting the service done two weeks prior to your event. This is in case your skin gets red or flaky from the service, you’ll be over those effects in time for your event.

Ideally, I’d love for you to get a service done 5-6 weeks prior to your event, and then again a week before. The first time is to see how your skin does, the second is to give you that big boost right before your event.

3. Follow your skin care routine

Professional facial treatments make for excellent resets or boosts for your skin. But at least 80% of the benefits your skin will receive will be from the skin care you’re using regularly and routinely at home.

I recommend following a skin care routine every morning and evening. Here are a few product types to consider:

Morning routine:

  • Gentle cleanser (if needed)
  • Hydrating toner
  • Hydroxy acid serum*
  • Antioxidant serum
  • Moisturizer*
  • Sun protection*

Evening routine:

  • Gentle cleanser*
  • Hydrating toner
  • Hydroxy acid serum*
  • Retinol (or other Vitamin A product)
  • Moisturizer*
  • AcneMed (skip moisturizer if using AcneMed)*

*asterisks denote the products you 100% want to include in your routine!

Sticking to your routine every day throughout the year will help your skin be ready to handle all kinds of stress with more alacrity – so I always recommend staying on top of your skin care routine!

If you’re not totally in love with your current routine, let me know! We can find some products that will work better for you and your skin needs.
