Accutane (Isotretinoin)

What is Accutane®?

Accutane®, or Isotretinoin, is an oral prescription drug derivative of Vitamin A used to treat severe acne.

Side effects

Isotretinoin causes severe side effects, including:

  • severe dryness (including dryness of lips and moth)
  • swelling of eyelids
  • nosebleeds
  • upset stomach, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting
  • hair thinning
  • depression
  • pancreatitis
  • headache
  • vision changes
  • ringing ears, hearing loss
  • chest pain
  • dizziness
  • trouble breathing
  • low back pain
  • abnormal menses
  • birth defects
  • far more, but you get the point

After losing a $33 million law suit (damages awarded to people with bowel disease caused by the drug), the patent-holder for Accutane® stopped selling the product under this brand name. However, isotretinoin is still prescribed.
